Abstract:

The developed and implemented concept of creating a geographic information system (GIS) “Glaciers of the Central and Western Caucasus” is presented in the article.  To store information a geodatabase is chosen.

All available information is classified in accordance with the requirements of constructing geodatabases for the implementation of GIS projects and grouped by the main data sets: Observation Points, Geomorphology, Meteorology, Ecology, Human Influence and Model Estimates. For unification of the accumulated data, as well as simple search and indexing, a simple naming system is developed. A prefix denoting a glacier and a postfix denoting a feature type are added to each feature. For raster objects, only the prefix is used. Also a system of abbreviations and acronyms is developed.

The spatial organization of data in the GIS project includes the following data frames: Work map; Vector layers; Rasters.

The described geographic information system is currently a prototype and is being tested. But even now this approach shows its effectiveness in storing and analyzing glaciological and meteorological information. The system is continuously updated with the results of calculations using mathematical models and meteorological information from open sources. In the future, a transformation from GIS to an electronic collection or electronic publication with publication on the Internet is possible.
