Abstract:
Preservation of wooden architecture monuments as cultural heritage sites in the European part of Russia is a pressing issue. Natural factors of wood destruction include natural and climatic conditions. Increased air humidity against the background of rising ground air temperatures creates favorable conditions for increased biological activity, causing destruction (decomposition) of wooden structures under the influence of fungi, mold, algae, and insects. To assess the risk of decay of wooden structures of cultural heritage sites, the Scheffer Climate Index (SCI) was used, which determines the regional risk of decay under the influence of climatic conditions based on the average air temperature and the number of days with precipitation. The paper assesses current changes in the Scheffer Index in the European part of Russia. Daily data on average air temperature and precipitation for the period 1961–2020 from the ERA5 reanalysis were used to obtain the spatial distribution of the median values of the index and its trends. The results showed a statistically significant increase in the Scheffer index in the northwest of the region, and, consequently, an increase in the risk of destruction of wooden structures of cultural heritage sites.
