Abstract:

The allelopathic response of woody plant seedlings to the presence and absence of forest litter was assessed under the combined effect of recreational and technogenic factors in the natural environment. The seed material of beech, boxwood, hornbeam and yew for the experiments was collected in the autumn of the previous year, in communities with no chronic air pollution and a topsoil density of no more than 0.8 g/cm3. Planting of sprouted seeds in the field was carried out in five soil density ranges and three variants of air pollution. Soil was watered once with 100 ml of river water after planting, which brought the concentrations of allelopathic substances isolated in the experiment closer to natural conditions. Analytical samples were prepared on an aqueous extract (1:50), and radish seeds served as a biotest. The number of colins was calculated using a scale of conventional coumarin units. The activity of the solutions was assessed by the index of the relative allelopathic effect. It was found that the seedlings exhibit high sensitivity to the state of the environment, reacting to the presence of forest litter and the purity of the atmospheric air with a field tolerance index in the range of 1.88–7.88 and a degree of recreational soil compaction from 0.7 to 1.6–1.7 g/cm3.
