Abstract:

This paper presents a new assessment of the amount of marine sediment lifted from the seabed in a special device that creates a vertically oriented vortex flow. The device aims to capture sediment transported by wave action, raise it from the bottom, and deliver it to the shore. In this manner, shoreline reinforcement against wave-induced erosion, beach area protection, and beach restoration objectives are addressed. To enhance sediment capture, additional design elements of the vortex well are selected and optimized. Based on systematic studies of pressure fluctuations on a slope subjected to wave impact, the discharge of bottom sediment carried by the nearshore current in the surf zone under storm conditions is evaluated. The possibility of beach restoration by constructing a chain of artificial islands and infilling the areas between them and the shore is demonstrated, particularly for coasts that undergo continuous erosion by the sea, as exemplified by the western coast of Crimea. The relationship between bottom sediment discharge and the characteristics of quasi-periodic flow pulsations near the seabed is established using known correlations between instantaneous flow kinematics and pressure values.
