Abstract:

The paper focuses on the study of interannual variability of the potential recruitment of the Black Sea mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis population off the coast of Crimea during the winter-spring period of its settling in connection with water temperature anomalies during the cold period (November – April) and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events occurring during the same period. It was determined that in 1999–2022, in most cases, the potential mussel recruitment was above the long-term average for January–June in those years when the La Niña event occurred during the cold period. In these cases both positive and negative temperature anomalies of water prevailed. Reduced mussel recruitment was observed mainly in years when positive water temperature anomalies prevailed, but this was not confined to ENSO phases. At the same time, the maximum of mussel recruitment for the entire measurement period was noted during the El Niño event (2010), and the minimum value of recruitment, almost equal to zero, was noted with a pronounced prevalence of negative temperature anomalies (2017). These facts may indicate that the variability of the potential recruitment of the Black Sea mussel population is determined not only by water temperature during the cold period, but also by other factors that can be revealed in the course of subsequent studies.
