Sevastopol beaches: historical and geographical analysis

Abstract:

The history of the development of Sevastopol beach territories from the city foundation to the present day is studied. The historical information is systematized, allowing for the identification of four stages in the formation and development of the beach economy of the city. The analysis of the place and role of bathing and beach recreation resources in the city economy is conducted, taking into account the changing development strategies of Sevastopol. The main problems of the beach economy and the most important decisions made by the city authorities regarding beaches in the early 2000s are examined. The natural and recreational features of the region beach resources from Cape Lucullus to Cape Sarych are determined, on the basis of which three beach areas are identified. The organizational structure and current state of Sevastopol beaches are studied. The changes in the area and recreational capacity of the city beaches “Uchkuevka”, “Khrustalny”, “Solnechny”, “Pesochny”, “Park Pobedy”, “Omega”, and “Ushakova Balka” over the past fifteen years are assessed. The contribution of the city beaches “Aquamarine” and “Soldatsky” to the expansion of bathing and beach recreation areas is calculated. The projects for the improvement of urban public beach areas is described.
