Abstract:

The paper describes the database structure for storing taxonomic, geographical, ecological and other data on diatom microalgae of inland waters of the Crimean Peninsula. Structure of the database is designed from information modules and includes taxonomic and geographic modules, modules with ecological parameters, with the description of data sources, and information on individual cells of microalgae. The modules are bound together using a linking table. The entries of this table consist of fields for storing: the identifier of a specimen, a taxonomic name, the location of finding, the values of ecological parameters, the date of finding, and the identifier of a data source.
Usually, instead of the mentioned complex information, we get its fragments, in which, for example, there are no values of ecological characteristics of sampling locations, the exact position of sampling points is unknown or there is no information about the specimens of organisms used for species identification. The structure of the linkage table allows storing such fragments, it is enough to leave out the fields with missing values.
The information published in L.N. Bukhtiyarova’s monograph (1999) was used for filling the database. These data were digitized, systematized, and structuralized by the authors. The information system for remote work with the materials of the database is located at: 3d microalgae.org/diatoms/of/crimea.
The structure of the database is universal and allows storing complex ecological and geographical information about any groups of organisms from any region.

Keywords: biological database, taxonomic information system, geographical object, diatoms, taxonomic composition, Crimea, inland waters.
